La Fille style head. Sotheby’s: pardessus; length of back 37.4 cm; 1-piece back; pegbox with stamped decoration; fingerboard and tailpiece tipped with ivory. (Yale’s 1748 has same “baseball” ornament on tailpiece.) Hayes 1930, pl. 5, is identified as this instrument, but actually shows 1761 Guersan 5-string pardessus (front view) also then owned by Dolmetsch. Last digit of date unclear, perhaps 2 rather than 3. Violin-family instruments by this maker also extant, likewise with no first name. Unknown relationship (if any) to composer of harpsichord sonatas published in 1764 by “Mr. Feyzeau,” who identifies himself as a student of “Mr. Beck”, i.e. Franz Beck (1734-1809), who worked in Bordeaux starting c. 1760.
