Sotheby’s 1988/11/23-25, lot 663

With period case. Fingerboard and neck narrowed for use with only four strings; rewidened with ebony wood and putty filler; now angled quite far back. Fingerboard and tailpiece have black and white trapezoidal pattern; elaborately carved pegbox. Website dimensions: 55.0 (back), 25.7/18.7/30.3, 10.7, 51.3. Sotheby’s: originally made for Margrave of Brandenburg; Heyde 1994 says wrong. Not in Otterstedt 1986? Cf. Yale’s Karpp tenor, also with C holes (not flame) andblack-and-white design on fingerboard and tailpiece.
