Large table ornament; diamond-pattern back ornaments also relatively large, at bottom and below fold but not in middle, all of unusual design. Double purfling front and back; separate perimeters enclose fold and rest of back. C-holes set very diagonally, with lower eyes below body corners. Scroll has a disk instead of ears. Location very clearly Exon, not Oxon as on handwritten label in same maker’s 1688 bass. Hamamatsu 1995: “treble viol,” total length 76.5. Baines 1966, p. 18: “tenor viol”, [despite] body length 41, and reports label text as “Exon (but ? Oxford)”.
