Comments:
Not in Martius 2015. 3-piece table with quadruple purfling plus ivory edging; 2-piece back with no purfling. Pegbox has foliate carving on back and sides; pegs are squarish with ivory pips. 3 crossbars on back, plus soundpost plate. Back is poplar, according to Monical’s insurance description (dated 10/23/83; attribution to “Leipzig School, probably J.C. Hoffmann, c. 1730”; his dimensions 67.2, 31.5/22.8/38.0. 12.4 [at C-bouts], 62.7). Neck rather short, but accomodates 7 frets; made for S. Beck by Mr. Melge, in Lazare Rudié’s shop; instrument had a cello neck when purchased by Beck.
