Comments:

Striped back; perhaps a composite, and/or cut down in size. Neck and scroll by Nathalie Dolmetsch, c. 1940 (letter to MAB 8/19/75); her father found it in West of England c. 1928 (letter 9/19/75); they considered it to be Italian. Previous owner’s grandfather had used as small cello (letter 9/19/75); she used it as a lyra viol in D (undated letter). NB pegbox has 5 plugged holes: perhaps once used as a cello piccolo? Burritt Miller has suggested Flemish origin; based on photos, Wm. Monical proposes either English or Flemish (and 17th C.), based on varnish, materials, and simple/economical construction.
