Wells 1977, p. 250 (front); Sotheby’s 11/25/76, lot 305 (front); [by TGM: FB+S, head side]

Sotheby’s 1976/11/25, lot 305

2-piece table and back, both with 2 lines of inked purfling. Neck barely long enough for 7 frets. When acquired by HMB in 1976 at Sotheby’s, had fingerboard with 12 inlaid brass frets (still kept with instrument, as are previous tailpiece and nut); fingerboard itself may be original, though the frets not necessarily also; current fittings and bridge by W.L. Monical. (Wells 1977: “This tenor followed the classical English outline but had original brass frets inlaid in the fingerboard.”) No crossbars except soundpost plate. Sister instrument was lot 290 at Sotheby’s 6/14/90 (ex-coll. Dennis Nesbitt).
