Martius JCH 37. Table with wide grain, single purfling plus ebony adging, medium arching with slight recurve. Back with very wide soundpost plate; wide corner blocks. When acquired from G. Hellwig in 1980s had no neck or head, though with remains of a cello neck at button; unclear if top block is original. Interior details suggest a rebuild in S. Germany or Vienna. Dendrochronology (by Peter Klein) gives date of 1723 for youngest growth ring on table. Restored as a (7-string) viol by Reinhard Fischer in 1986. Back widths 39.3/22.8/30.7
