Otterstedt 1994, p. 151; Mahillon 2/1893, 1:322

On museum’s website (front [color]); [unpublished, from J. Pringle 1/92: FB+S; head front 3/4, B+S; soundhole and decoration details]; [TGM 6/88: front]

Otterstedt 1994 claims this is “wahrscheinlich ein englisches Insrument”, noting that Barbey is said to have made many viols out of English wood. Marco Ternovec, who offers copies of this viol, says it has a 3-piece table and English-style geometrical purfling decorations on back and table. His website shows facsimile of a label (in handwriting very similar but not completely identical to the label in the Ohio Barbey) reading “Guillaume Barbey / fait a Paris 1717,” which may derive from Lütgendorff (no. 84 in 1922 ed., but in 2nd ed. appears with Barbey entry which describes this viol, thus implying the label belongs to it). Tourin: head is gilt; double purfling. Museum’s website: date 1716. .
