Offered to MFA Boston by private owner. Varnish on table much lighter than on back and ribs. Rosette. Supposedly, W. Monical believes it has always been a cello; but K. Martius (to TGM, 1/09) notes from photos that pegbox appears grafted, and to have extra, plugged pegholes: perhaps originally 5-string, “what Weigel and others call a ‘violon,’ instruments played with or without frets [and] tuned in fourths or fifths depending on the player.” Possibly by Jais, but lion not his; other candidates include Christa, Mayr, Fischer, Kämbl, as well as Alletsee; less likely from Prague or Vienna.
