Jean-Michel Renard, Bellenaves (France)-2003 (? sold at auction, Hotel Drouot)
TGM visit 2/08 (after concert at French Embassy in Washington); J-M Renard to TGM, 5/03
[By TGM: front, back body only, head side, neck heel (color)]; [unpublished, from J. M. Renard: F+B (color)]
3-piece table of coarse to medium grained wood, 2-piece back, both with double inked purfling. Soundholes rather wide and diagonal, with lower eyes well below body corners; two small, faint (inked?) designs on table. Diamond inlay patterns on (blonde) tailpiece and end of fingerboard. Neck not original; scroll may be old but not original; pegbox is grafted to both. Bridge new since acquisition by Hantaï. No back braces except soundpost plate; parchment linings on center joint and fold. Owner says extensively documented by Benoît Gervais (Vienna), who wrote TGM 1/10 declining to suggest an origin, adding that the table may not be spruce, that its outer pieces are less and less quartered toward the edges, and that there are tooth-plane marks on the outside surfaces of the ribs. W. Monical to TGM 10/16: body outline, C-holes, multi-piece table, open scroll and pegbox, use of parchment linings all support English origin; purfling scribed, not inked.
