[Unpublished, from H. Harders 8/11: FB+S, head 3/4 (color)]; [unpublished, from J. Topham: numerous restoration details (color)]
When acquired by Kessler, had been used as a viola, with replacement neck and cut-down ribs. Restored by John Topham, 2001-03: new neck, inlaid fingerboard, open scroll with carved sides, replacement circular rosette (modeled on V+A Jaye alto), ribs rebuilt from 4 to 8 cm height. Length and width dimensions taken from drawing (have photocopy), so not over arching. Back is striped, 3 strips plum and 2 of burred maple; ribs are also plum; double purfling front and back (latter dark on blond stripes, blond on dark stripes). Dendrochronological tests on table yielded no matches.
