Hellwig 2011, p. 416 (front, head F+B 3/4 [color]); Biordi & Giraud 1996, pp. 81-83 (front, pegbox back, label)
Auctioned at Bonhams, London, 14 November 1995, lot 70. Ivory edging on table; finely carved pegbox. 2-piece table, 4-piece back. Linings not original, nor are 4 reinforcing bars on back (apart from soundpost plate). Bridge marked Alfred E. Chanot [1890-1964, fl. London 1Q20C]. Neck, fingerboard, tailpiece, and pegs not original, perhaps also by Chanot. Neck rather short, allowing maximum string length of ± 65 cm. Hellwig 2011: ribs probably cut down; both pegbox (with carved sides and open-carved back) and head (in mature style) “denen Tielkes zum Verwechseln ähnlich”; dimensions 68.6, 34.1/21.7/37.1, -, -. Montagu 1996: “some of it, at least, cannot have been earlier than its days at Brownsea Castle.”
