Martius 2015, pp. 372-73
Martius 2015, pp. 372-73 (F+S, underside of table, inside of back, label [color]); [unpublished, from K. Martius 4/07: FB+S, body only with table removed, including label (color)]; [from M. Herzog 6/98: FB+S]
Martius JCH 39. Table with double purfling plus ebony edging and rosette. 1-piece back (with no purfling) and ribs of bird’s eye maple. Very wide soundpost plate, relatively small corner blocks; top block may be original, bottom block not. Neck probably original, but a sawcut on the back reveals it has been shortened, perhaps to permit playing as pardessus rather than treble; now barely long enough for 7 frets. Pegbox back fluted, sides plain; fingerboard and tailpiece perhaps original (maple with hardwood veneer stained black); ebony hookbar. Very dark (but perhaps original?) varnish. Back widths 15.5/10.2/19.8. Has been wrongly dated 1719, due to misreading of the last 4 letters of “Leipzig,” the final word on the label. “Restauré 1997 / S[erge] Rinsoz / Vuarrens” [= north of Lausanne].
