Comments:
Otto & Adelmann 1975, p. 123; Sachs 1922, col. 120
Sachs 1922: sehr roh gemacht und stark verdächtig. Otto & Adelmann 1975: “Violone, Kontrabaß-Viola da gamba”. On outside of back, in ink above fold: 1726 / Johann Caspar Weisshaupt / 1829; he repaired but did not originally make it. Overhanging edges and “stumpfen Ecken”. Table has painted purfling, long and narrow F-holes. Back and ribs of poplar. Neck too short for 7th fret. Unusual pegs may be original, likewise fingerboard and tailpiece (attached with tailgut). Sachs:Kontrabassviola; dimensions 86, 24/-/45.5, -, -. Body and soundholes shapes confirmed by TGM in person 11/10, but no photos; dendrochronology gives latest year ring as 1740 (per Dr. Klein, via A. Otterstedt 11/10).
