Sotheby’s 11/23-25/88, lot 663
On museum’s website (FB+S, head FB+S, neck heel, label; case [all color]); Heyde 1994, pp. 370-71 (front, head FB+S, label); Sotheby’s 11/23-25/88, lot 663 (F+B)
Sotheby’s 1988/11/23-25, lot 663
With period case. Fingerboard and neck narrowed for use with only four strings; rewidened with ebony wood and putty filler; now angled quite far back. Fingerboard and tailpiece have black and white trapezoidal pattern; elaborately carved pegbox. Sotheby’s: originally made for Margrave of Brandenburg; Heyde says wrong. Not in Otterstedt 1986? Cf. Yale’s Karpp tenor, BL 55.4, also with C holes (not flame) and B&W design on fingerboard and tailpiece.
