Heyde 1983, p. 87 (front); Saase 1972, p. 86 (FB+S)
Heyde 1983: Label is false: originally a South-German Bassgeige; striped back & ribs are oldest parts, perhaps even late 16th-C. Probably converted to cello in 18th C., to gamba in early 20th C. B&W table rim. Unusually shaped soundholes.Saase 1972: 1-piece table, back of 37 narrow strips of maple, ebony, and palisander; both with ebony-and-ivory edging and overhanging edges; ribs similar to back. Probably converted to a cello c. 1700, then back to a viol in 19th C., perhaps by J.B. Vuillaume.
