On museum’s website (FB+S, head side; front 7/8, back, head 3/4 [color]); Herzog 2002, p. 155 (front); Mucchi 1940, pl. XXXI (FB+S)

Tourin: Same body and soundhole shape (also raised lines at four corners: Herzog’s “El Greco” model) as ASHMOL 2 & 3. Overhanging edges, parchment rose. Blond fingerboard with English purfling pattern of diamonds; elaborate tailpiece with bas-relief pattern carving; similar carving on scroll/pegbox and pegs. Double purfling front and back, narrow neck. Museum’s website and Gétreau 1996 call it a “lyre de gambe”; Gétreau says only attributed to da Salo. Website: head, ribs and tailpiece replaced in 19th C; repaired in 1876 by Gand & Bernardel frères; lacked neck when bought by Fau (Gétreau 1996, pp. 213, 446). Herzog 2003: central, carved bass bar, original fingerboard, carved table of Cedar of Lebanon; quotes museum report by Moens that head and tailpiece are “façon Tolbecque, fin 19e”. (Moens 2004: “nahezu sicher eine Fälschung aus dem 19. Jahrhundert”; but very different from Zenatto viols in Brussels museum.) Mucchi 1940, pl. XXXI identifies this viol as a copy of ASHMOL 2 (his pl. XXX), but that is significantly larger. On display 8/02: no ears on scroll. Museum’s dimensions: 54.5, 27.5/-/33.0, -, -. Drawing by John Pringle available from museum.about 55)
