Comments:

Roosen 2001, pp. 49-51; Köpp 2000, p. 152; Vannes 1956, p. 17

Roosen 2001, pp. 52-53 (FB+S, head 3/4, rosette [color]); Paganelli 1970, p. 86 (front 7/8); Vannes 1956, pl. 79 (front 3/4); [by PT: front (color)]

Roosen 2001: Alt-Viola da gamba; 2-piece table with recurve and painted purfling; rosette (probably not original); 2-piece back with no border decoration. 3 crossbars (only the middle one original). Unusually short neck with rounded profile (but may be original); no frets; tailgut. 2 pegs treble, 3 bass side; all pegs match the one replacement on Aman instrument in same collection. Varnish on table is a different color from back and ribs. Perhaps an arm-viol or viola d'amore without sympathetic strings. Repair label on top block: “J.K. Züst jun. St. Gallen / Geigenmacher und Reparateur / 26 Aug. 92...”; and in pencil on bass lower rib: “Repariert Hermann Seyffarth / Leipzig-Gohlis 1903.” Köpp 2000: viola d’amore (with blindfolded Cupid head); gives label text as “Josef Stoss Länder / Augsburg Anno 1718”; cites photo in F. Oberkogler, Vom Wesen und Werden der Musikinstrumente (Schaffhausen 1985), pp. 19f. Drescher 1990: not certain it’s by Stoss. (TGM: Stoss became a citizen of Füssen in 1705; is Augsburg label of 1718 perhaps a fake? Tourin: tenor; dimensions 46.8, 21.6/14.7/27.5, 8.2, 39.5; tailgut is original; arm viol?
