Martius MH 3. Table with double purfling plus (later?) ivory edging, rosette, and original, integral bass bar; back with edging (partially black-and-white, partially just ivory), narrow ivory strip along center joint, and 3 crossbars plus soundpost plate; ribs with ivory at corners. Originally had a through-neck, of which only the foot (of beechwood) remains; the neck itself is not original and grafted to the pegbox, which has carved back and sides and a coarsely carved head; inlaid, ivory-veneered tailpiece probably not original. Dendrochronology (by Peter Klein) gives date of 1668 for youngest growth ring on table.“Repariert, eingelegt und wieder zur Gambe umgearbeitet von Hermann Seyffarth in Leipzig-Gohlis 1894.” Formerly had an ivory plaque inscribed “Prinzessin Thekla von Schwarzenberg schenkte diese Gamba, auf der ihr Großvater einst gespielt, Herrn Paul de Wit in Leipzig 1894.” Technical drawing by Ute Singer at museum. Back widths 36.3/22.0/29.3. Tourin dimensions 64.6, 31/-/37.5, 13.5, 61.5-64.5; Kinsky dimensions 64.5, 31/-/37.5, 13.5, -.
