Comments:
Tourin: 5-piece table with double purfling (each a single dark strip), 2-piece back, nicely flamed, with none; light orangy varnish; “big body!” Neck is new (graft at pegbox, obvious work at butt, now mortised), maybe also pegbox (7th peg almost surely added). Main brace set rather low; small wooden liners and corner blocks. “Looks like a 17th C. English viol”; last two digits of label date unreadable, perhaps fake or from a repair? (Vannes: Pommier = “originaire d’Allemagne, établi à Lyon au XVIIIe siècle”; he knew a large-pattern violin with pale yellow varnish and low arching labeled “Fait à Lyon par / P. Pommier 1722”.) Klaus 1977: 7-piece table, 2-piece back; dimensions 79.5, 36.6/28.0/44.8, 13.9, 69.8.
