Hellwig 2011, TieWV 032; Hellwig 1980, no. 027. 3-piece table with ebony/ivory edging, double purfling, and rosette; 3-piece back (arched, with ebony/ivory edging and glued-on carved ornaments at top and bottom) and ribs of bird’s-eye maple. Pegbox with open-carved back; inlaid fingerboard and tailpiece (tortoiseshell on ivory veneer, the former narrowed and wedge not original, both with artificial gemstones. Dimensions 67.3, 31.5/23.5/38.4, 115, -. Hellwig 2011 adds: back also has single purfling; no soundpost plate or other crossbars on back; peg for top string is closest to nut, and unused hole for 7th peg drilled through lady’s hair. Lower end of fingerboard has marquetry showing Cupud and Hercules, first such emblem on a Tielke viol. Back widths 31.0/23.4/38.1. Gemstones protruding from fingerboard suggests viol made for display rather than performance.
