Formerly attributed to Meares (by Dolmetsches, hence also in Tourin); probably the same as LOAN 5, in 1904 owned by T.W. Taphouse (and exhibited with 4 strings, dated 1680). Fleming 2001: 3-piece table, single purfling front and back, heart-shaped rosette; back has diamond-pattern inlays at top, middle, and bottom (but different from 1656 Turner treble); attribution to Turner, p. 334, based on body outline, purfling, and rosette. Palmer 1981: head, neck, fingerboard and tailpiece are reconstructions; striped ribs suggest reconversion from viola. Dolmetsch 1978: ribs rebuilt in Dolmetsch Workshops, with addition of walnut stripes; lion’s head by N. Dolmetsch; dimensions: 40.0, 19.5/-/23.5, 7.0, 40.7.
