Comments:

Table with high arching, rosette, and 5-ply purfling; back with similar purfling plus a single line considerably farther from edge, which loops inward at 4 corners and button; both with significant recurve. Corners unpointed, shoulders rather square; soundholes have something like a star instead of upper eyes, with a small circular hole just inside the main curve. Gift to Herzog from Lindeman, having been in latter’s family “as long as Fred can remember,” with no neck, and the body seemingly coated only with a ground but no (colored) varnish. (Previous owner was a family friend, a musicologist and museum curator, who bought it at an auction.) Lindeman says appearance suggests origin in 18th-C. Bavaria or Bohemia. Traces of pins in the bottom rib and on the table near the neck, perhaps for 5 metal sympathetic strings. New neck, head, and all fittings by Amit Tiefenbrunn, Israel, c. 2008.
