Comments:
Restored by Jörn Erichson, D-Bad Gandersheim (his report sent by owner); had previously been restored as a viol (but with neck too short, narrow, and angled, etc.), perhaps by Heinrich Th. Zimmermann, Markneukirchen, whose repair label found inside; presumably after an earlier cello conversion. Acquired with fake label “Gregorius Karp Königsberg 1696” (now has photocopy of label in Otterstedt no. 7), but his authorship confirmed by kind of wood used, and 3-piece table. Black-and-white border probably not original, perhaps also rosette. C-holes probably recut from Karp’s usual flames. Pegbox lengthened from 4 to 6 pegs: relic of cello state? New head copied from Otterstedt no. 7; new neck, fingerboard and tailpiece, hookbar, pegs.
