Arched back with fold; pointed corners, rounded shoulders, and overhanging edges; double purfling on front and back. Found as a cello, changed to viol by John Topham at owner’s request, 2001 (new neck, pegbox, and fittings). Dendrochronology shows youngest tree rings on table are from 1662 and 1665, using wood from same tree as two [other] viols by Lewis; this instrument perhaps made 10-20 years later. When bought, had false label “Maggini fecit in Brescia 164...” and repair label “Repaired by J.W. Hinchcliffe / 9, Stoke Road, Plymouth”, both now removed.
