Comments:
Sotheby’s 2001/11/21, lot 276
Sotheby’s 11/21/01 mistranscribes maker’s name as “Lorris” (error repeated by Montagu 2002); body length presumably taken on back. Floral table ornament. Back divided into 3 sections (catalogue says “two-piece back”--?), seemingly slab cut, with diamond-pattern decorations at bottom, middle, and below fold (not connected, unlike 3 other specimens), plus neck heel. Tailpiece carved and sculpted, with tailgut; fingerboard has scalloped lower edge (both reddish-brown wood). (Body widths and string length from condition report sent to John Moran, which also specifies multiple repairs for cracks and worm damage.) Montagu 2002: “new neck and fittings...made £22,350.”
