Comments:

1-piece table, 1-piece back, both with single purfling. Bass bar probably original, also varnish. Neck, fingerboard, nut, bridge, tailpiece, pegs, and head not original; ribs cut down for conversion to a viola, eliminating fold in back. (Style of alterations suggests early 19th century work.) Apparently the earliest known instrument by this maker; text of label and spelling of first name non-standard, but instrument itself confirms his authorship.
