Comments:

Moens 1995: “Viola da spalla”? Narrow body with very large C-bouts. Moens 1995 and 1989 suggests that odd body outline may result from the table having been cut down from available space between soundholes of a much larger instrument. (Only comparable viol is “Zenatto” in Lisbon, LIS 13; perhaps this one by same maker in 19C?) 3-piece table with very diagonal F-holes; no purfling but edges are beveled. Moens 1995: head and pegbox integral, but head is later. Exposition 1969: back of cypress? Fingerboard deeply marked by frets; pegbox probably not original; Italy, 16th C.: viola da spalla? Mahillon 1900: head and tailpiece not original. Museum’s website: date 1801/1886.
