For Sale: Bass Viol
Bass Viol, 6 string, Wolfgang A. Uebel ; 1972. Very good sound. Beautiful, highly decorated, excellent condition. Deeply flamed maple body back and sides. Ivory body front edge strip, ivory nut, fancy ebony/ivory tuning pegs and tailpeg. Fancy carved woman's head, hair with pearls and a bun, great detail and expression, fancy carved filligree peg box and neck side. Embossed fluting and ivy leaves on back, embossed design on end of fingerboard. Strings: two are new, two are silver-wound. Total length 127 cm, body 72cm high, 37cm wide bottom and 31cm wide top, string length 67 cm (nut-bridge). There is a crack in the tail piece below the tail peg. There is a very thin, almost imperceptible crack (3 inches) on the upper edge of the back. Fitted hard case, two extra strings. Fancy bow by Arnold Dolmetsch: fluted hexagonal, ivory frog with carved "heart" (with a very small chip in the corner), ivory button, 72cm (60cm free hair). $5000. Photos upon request. Lira da braccio based on a famous original by Giovanni d'Andrea from the 16th c. which is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Inside the instrument is written "Lira Da Braccio, Andres Beauguy 26-07-1946". This instrument was probably made from a painting by a rare early music enthusiast.
