The Pan-Pacific Gamba Gathering was
a worldwide assembly of enthusiasts
coming together to play the
viola da gamba
and to discuss its historical
Western European context, its
adoption by other cultures, and its
future. The event featured lectures, demonstrations,
panel discussions, and lots of concerts, which were
open to the public.
(The viol is related to the 'ukulele!
Here's a flier for PPGG
with a family tree in pictures.)
The meeting's six themes
celebrated the six strings of the viol:
- Opportunities to play at all levels;
- Sessions for teachers;
- Talks on the viol's history, and demonstrations of Eastern &
Western, ancient & traditional underhand bowed
string instruments;
- New music for old instruments,
particularly with a Pacific Rim influence;
-
A Musical feast --
- Tours & family relaxation Hawaiian-style.

The PPGG has been
a collaborative project of the Viola da Gamba Society of America,
the Viola da Gamba Society of Japan, the Viola da Gamba Society of Australia,
the Music Department of the University of Hawaii at Manoa,
and Early Music Hawaii, with assistance from individuals in New Zealand and
elsewhere. Additional support was provided by the
Hawai'i Council for the Humanities and Asahi Shimbun Foundation.
