PAN-PACIFIC GAMBA GATHERING
The Viola da Gamba as a World Instrument
July 29 - August 5, 2007
University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii
Music Department -- Orvis Auditorium and nearby classrooms

The Pan-Pacific Gamba Gathering was a worldwide assembly of enthusiasts coming together to play the viola da gamba and to discuss its historical Western European context, its adoption by other cultures, and its future. The event featured lectures, demonstrations, panel discussions, and lots of concerts, which were open to the public. (The viol is related to the 'ukulele! Here's a flier for PPGG with a family tree in pictures.)

The meeting's six themes celebrated the six strings of the viol:

  1. Opportunities to play at all levels;
  2. Sessions for teachers;
  3. Talks on the viol's history, and demonstrations of Eastern & Western, ancient & traditional underhand bowed string instruments;
  4. New music for old instruments, particularly with a Pacific Rim influence;
  5. A Musical feast --
  6. Tours & family relaxation Hawaiian-style.
All programs, lectures, and proceedings of this gathering that are provided to the webmaster in downloadable form will be posted on this website and listed below.
